staying in lessons

To reiterate the message at the start of term students must feel comfortable in class, and sometimes might need to leave to go to the loo.  However, this must be the exception, and students should always think carefully and plan to go to the loo outside lesson time.  Year 8 started term well, but in week 2 you were leaving class far more than any other year group.  Students must please look to only leave class if really needed, and if there is a medical concern that means you need to go more often then let Mrs Yue know.

“It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit and be my disciples.”

Ligia Brigones who helps women in Nicaragua stand up for their rights says, "when we are alone we are afraid, but we are stronger together... we help each other."

We have the strong trunk of the vine, Jesus, sharing God's word to encourage us, to nurture us, the branches to stay connected to the source of life.

God the gardener encourages us to prune our lives of 'the stuff' that gets in the way of true connection. As we are pruned we bloom, resourced to reach out to others. The branches of the vine are numerous and strong.

CAFOD produces much fruit thanks to the many volunteers and supporters who listen to God's word and live in Christ. We are members of the global church network which stretches around the world.

Let us savour the words of John, "As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, unless it remains part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me" as we rejoice in being an active member of a thriving community nourished by love of God and our neighbour.

Prayer
Fruitful God,
we thank you for your word and commandments which guide us to grow branches on your tree. We thank you for Jesus the vine, pruned that all may have life to the full. We thank you, Gardener God, that in pruning us you help us remain fruitful in you, bringing you glory.
Amen.

Dear Form 1 and Form 2,

I'm looking forward to another term of competitiveness around the table tennis tables! You do not need to wear any special clothing for this club (if you have your own bat you may bring it). Please bring all your things with you and meet me at the bench near the dismissal area at the front of the school.

See you on Thursday!

Article of the Week

Maybe my books saved my life’ says writer

Is free speech sacred? “Language was my knife,” says 76-year-old Salman Rushdie in a dazzling comeback after the attempt on his life less than two years ago.

If you did not know the author Salman Rushdie, you might think him the unluckiest man in the world.

He had to move house 30 times between 1989 and 1998 to avoid would-be assassins. His Japanese translator was murdered in Tokyo. His Norwegian publisher was shot three times. His Italian translator was stabbed in Milan.

A trail of destruction followed Rushdie wherever he went. And then the worst happened. In August 2022, he was attacked at an education institute in New York State. His assailant stabbed him 12 times, including in his neck and abdomen.

But in reality, nothing that happened to Salman Rushdie came down to luck at all. On Valentine’s Day, 1989, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa ordering Muslims around the world to kill the controversial author.

The Ayatollah’s ire was inspired by Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses. Published in 1988, the divisive  book appears to mock some of the most sensitive tenets of Islam, including challenging the divinity of the Quran.

Thursday, 16 May 2024, 6.00pm

Is Music Infinite?

Gresham College Lecture, at LSO St Luke's, Old Street

This lecture explores the very limits of music; how much music might exist, whether it ever will be exhausted, and if there are any boundaries of our musical perception and imagination.

“Jesus said: I am the good shepherd.”

In the life of Jesus, we can get an understanding of why he used the word 'shepherd' to describe himself.

He cared about people, listened to them,
gave them food and drink,
helped them get better when they were ill,
and was willing to give up his life and die for them.

Prayer

God of all people,
you have given us a reliable
and caring guide,
in Jesus, our good shepherd.
May the message of his good news
help us to hear his voice
speaking to us today.
May we recognise his voice
in the cry of all those in need.
Amen.

Due to exams taking place in the Sports Hall on Wednesday 17 April - there will be no access to the changing rooms or the Sports Hall building.

Therefore pupils with PE on this day (L4B, L4C & L4G) will need to come into school in their PE kit and remain in the kit for the entire day.

All pupils should wear a school tracksuit over their normal PE kit.

DofE Gold Year 12 - Friday 19th April at 1pm in the Scriptorium

Well done to all of you that completed your Gold Practice DofE Expedition last week, the weather was torrid and you all dug deep and overcame everything the weather threw at you and rose to the challenge.  I was really impressed with the resilience and team work that you all displayed to achieve this.

We will meet on Friday 19th April at 1pm in the Scriptorium to start planning your assessment routes.  Please make every effort to attend.  If you have kit to return please either drop this in to my office or bring it to the sessions.  I particularly need the group first aid kits.

Going to the loo during lessons

It continues to be the case that students can go to the loo if they need during lessons (teachers will note this on trackitlights so we can keep track of this). Some students have particular SEN and/or medical needs which necessitates this.

However, it does remain the expectation that students will normally be able to stay in lessons for 50 minutes without needing the loo.  It is important that students do stay in class as the usual practice, and If it is felt that students are going out of lessons without good cause then this will be followed up by Mr Ramsden.  Students have breaks between lessons and also break and lunchtime when they should be going to the loo.

Respecting the school buildings

We are very lucky that our school estates team is always looking to give us the very best learning environment.  A number of classrooms have been redecorated over the last few months, and this process of redecoration will continue this term. Students are reminded that they must be respectful of their environment, and that if students do vandalise or break school property they will have to pay for this as well as receiving a sanction.

‘Mind-boggling’ leap of 38.5C in Antarctic

Is humanity mad? The evidence that we are smashing our own home to bits is piling up, yet we carry on like nothing is wrong. Some say it is a sign we are at the end of our tether.

The temperature in London this morning is 8 degrees Celsius. Imagine that the moment you set foot outside the door, it suddenly shot up to 46C. Imagine the tarmac melting under your feet, birds falling from the trees, people dropping unconscious in the streets. Wouldn’t you be a little worried?

Over the weekend, scientists in AntarcticaThe most southerly continent, surrounding the South Pole. Its area is estimated at 5.5 million square miles, most of it covered in ice. reported that this is exactly what happened to them on 18 March 2022.1 A heatwave brought temperatures on the vast, icy continent up to 38.5C above the seasonal average.

Antarctica is home to some of the world’s most delicate ecosystemsComplex networks of living things that rely on each other to survive., and they are being ravaged by global heating. It is thought that if the world heats by 2C then up to three-quarters of Antarctic penguins could die out.
